Origin of scouting
1857 is an important year in the Indian History since freedom fight started during this year. On 22nd February of the year, Baden Powell was born. His full name is Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden Powell.
The scout movement came to India in 1909. Captian TH Baker started a troop for Anglo Indians in Bangalore. It is known as the first scout troop in India. In 1916 Dr. Annie Besant established the Indian Boy Scout Association in Madras. In 1920, in the first world Jamboree held at Olympia, London, BP was made the chief scout of the world. The Bharat scout and guides association was formed on 7th November 1950.
Definition:
The Bharat Scouts & Guides is a voluntary, non-political, educational movement for young people, open to all without distinction of origin, race or creed, in accordance with the purpose, principles and methods conceived by the Founder Lord Baden Powell in 1907.
Purpose:
The purpose of the Movement is to contribute to the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual potentials as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of local, national and international communities.
Principles:
The Scout /Guide Movement is based on the Following Principles.
Duty to God: Adherence to spiritual principle, loyalty to the religion that expresses the acceptance of the duties resulting there from.
Duty to Others: Loyalty to one’s country in harmony of local and international peace, understanding, co-operation.
Participation in the development of society with recognition and respect for dignity of one’s fellowmen and for the integrity of the natural world.
Duty to Self: Responsibility for the development of one’s self.
The Method:
The Scout /Guide Method is a system of progressive self-education through:-
A Promise and Law Learning by doing.
Membership of small groups under adult leadership involving progressive discovery and acceptance of responsibility and training towards self -government directed towards the development of character, and the acquisition of competence, self-reliance, dependability and capacities to co-operate and to lead.
Progressive and stimulating programmes of various activities based on the interest of the participants including games, useful skills and services to the community taking place largely in an outdoor setting in contact with nature.

Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden Powell known to millions by his magical initials. BP is founder of the Boy Scout and Girl Guide movement was born in London on the 22nd February 1857.
He collected together boys and held in a camp for them on Brown Sea Island in August 1907. After the great and successful camp he decided to write his how famous book Scouting for boys. It was published in 1908. Boys everywhere in England began to buy his book to start Scouting on their own. Thus patrols and troops began to spring up rapidly all over England.
After the formation of Boy Scout movement BP came to India twice once in 1921 and again in 1937 to attend the first all India Jamboree in Delhi and to attend in third separate organization. After going back he attended World Jamboree in Holland. This was the last jamboree he got to attend.

Scout motto
The scout motto is “be prepared”
This has to be achieved by being physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.
Scout sign
The scout sign is made by raising right hand palm to the front up to shoulder level, thumb resting on the nail of the little finger and the other fingers upright, pointing upwards. The three fingers remind a scout of the three parts of the scout promise. The scout sign is shown at the time of investiture renewal of the promise.
Scout salute

The scout salute is given by raising the right arm smartly to the level of the shoulder, palm to the front with three fingers stretched together, the right eye and the thumb closing on the little finger. After salute the arm is smartly brought down.
Scout left and shakes

Scout shakes hands with left hand. The founder borrowed this idea from the Ashanthi tribe of Africa. When once BP wanted to shake hand with an Ashanthi chieftain the chieftain offered him his left hand. Baden Powell wanted his scouts to leave aside all defensive postures and be open to welcome others especially a brother scout.
Parts of uniform
(i) Shirt:
A steel Grey shirt with two patch pockets with shoulder straps with Half or rolled up sleeves, sleeves may be turned down in cold weather.
(ii) Shorts or Trousers:
Navy blue shorts or trousers shall be worn.
(iii) Head-Dress:
Dark blue beret cap with the official cap badge supplied by the National Association.
(iv) Belt:
Grey Nylex belt with official buckle of the Bharat Scouts & Guides supplied by the National Association.
(v) Scarf:
A triangular scarf of the Group colour other than green, purple or yellow and pattern approved by the Local or District Association as the case may shoulder straps with the Group woggle, other than Gilwell woggle. Each of the two sides of scarf shall have a minimum length of 70cms and a maximum of 80cms.
(vi) Shoulder Badge:
A Shoulder Badge of 6 to 8 c.m x 1.5 c.m with white background and Red Border and the serial No. and Name of the group in Red letters shall be worn on both the shoulders just below the seam with a little curve.
(viii) Membership Badge:
A Cloth badge with green background and Fleur-de-lis in yellow superimposed by the Trefoil with Ashoka Chakra also in yellow in the centre shall be worn in the centre of the pleat of the left pocket of the shirt.
(x) World Scout Badge:
World Scout Badge should be worn in the centre of the pleat of the right pocket of the shirt.
(xi) Footwear:
“Black shoes (leather or canvas) with laces may be worn”.

Significance of national flag
The national flag of India is horizontal tricolor in equal proportion of deep saffron on the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom. The saffron stands for courage, sacrifice and the spirit of renunciation; the white for purity and truth; the green for faith and fertility. The ratio of the width to the length of the flag is two is to three (2:3).
The national flag shall be used only on such occasion and in such manner as in accordance with the rules made by the Government of India. We should be very careful with the national flag that in any should not be touched to the ground. The national flag hoisted after sunrise and should be lowered before sunset. It is our duty to give high respect to our national flag. Torn and ruined national flag should not be used in any occasion. The national flag should not be dipped in front of any persons.
The Bharat scout and guides flag shall be in deep sky blue colour. The emblem in yellow colour shall be in the centre of the flag with Ashoka Chakra in blue colour covered by the World Guide emblem “trefoil” and world scout emblem “Fleur de-lis” all in golden yellow colour.
Deep sky blue colour in the flag denotes world brotherhood/ sisterhood. World scout and guide emblems remember three parts of scout/ guide promise. Ashoka Chakra is meant to emphasize the Indian character of the movement.

Significance of world scout flag
World scout flag in purple colour, 3:2 in ratio of length and width, consists of the world scout emblem in white encircled a white chord the ends are tied with a reef knot. Three parts of the world scout emblem denotes three parts of scout promise, white chord, ends tied with reef knot resembles world brotherhood, two stars in it are the representation of knowledge and truth, the needle in upward direction is the needle of compass denotes straight forwardness of the scout movement.
World scout flag used in the programmes of the world organization of the scout movement (WOSM). The world scout flag was approved in 1961 at the 18th world conference held in Lisbon
Flag etiquette
The national flag shall be used only on such occasions and in such manner as is in accordance with the rules made by Government.
The flag must be treated with reverence at all times. The flag pole shall be sloped over the right shoulder and the flag gathered in. In march past it shall be held vertically and the flag must fly feely or the fly end must be held with the right hand.
The Bharat scout and guides flag must be dipped to the president of the Indian Republic; it shall not be dipped when the national anthem is played except when the president of the Indian Republic is present.
Flag carrying : The strap is worn out on the right shoulder. The right hand palm, facing front, holds the flag staff at a convenient place, above the left hand. In palm of the left hand faces the body. He fly end of the flag should be held with the right hand when it should not fly free.
On the shoulder: the flag staff is sloped over the right shoulder and the flag gathered in.
